Translations of some poems make me think of the sounds of the poems in their native language. If this poem was written in a geography close to ours, I would be ashamed of not knowing that language. The thing I am most ashamed of is not knowing Kurdish. I am no stranger to the harmony of Kurdish resulting from the language of rural life. But these lines from an elegy show that symbols are based on a structure as solid as this language:
"He had just been separated from his mother
goat cub"
It must be the tradition of Kurdish poetry that gives these simple lines their elegiac ring.
