Myth and Epic 3-Roman Histories
“For several years now, the word 'structure' has become capable of various meanings. Although it retains its ancient and definitive value - for example, when it comes to the structure of a proof, a novel or a state - it has also acquired a much more assertive technical use in a philosophical system that is very fashionable today and even gives its name. Confusion is the result. Now my works are also considered as manifestations of structuralism or among its foreshadowings due to the dates in which they were written – and depending on the author, this becomes a reason for praise or criticism. Some young structuralists even become impatient with my slowness or incompetence in following the advances in the doctrine and the interpretive techniques it inspires, and they teach me, by example, what conclusions more masterful or more orthodox thinkers might draw from my files. I want to put an end to these well-intentioned but unfounded efforts: I am not a structuralist and I have no interest in whether or not I am a structuralist. I work not as a philosopher, but as a historian, interested in the most ancient history and the extreme limit of history that can be reached by rational methods; That is, I am content to observe primary data in areas known to be genetically related to each other, and then try to reach the secondary data created by their common prototypes by making comparisons between some of these primary data; "In doing this, I have accepted ideas from the beginning and I have no hope of reaching universally valid results."
With the last volume of Dumézil's magnificent three-volume work, "Roman Histories", the adventure of this masterpiece of comparative philology is completed in Turkish.
