Myth and Religion in Ancient Greece
Can the religion of the Greeks be considered a religion as we understand it today? The author's answer to this question is no, revealed monotheistic religions and Greek polytheism should not be confused with each other. While monotheistic religions aim to achieve individual salvation through the church, Greek polytheism operates within the political boundaries of the ancient city. Religion orientates itself towards a worldly life by settling within the institutions of cities: it aims to see citizens not as people whose salvation will be provided in another world, but as people whose existence is entirely in this world. Religion throws sectarian movements and marginals out of its own area, and philosophy embraces these.
