Myth and Society in Ancient Greece
This time, Vernant examines the interaction between Greek society and institutions and myths. The book begins with topics such as class struggle, war, and marriage; It ends with general remarks on myths about fragrant plants, the myth of Prometheus, and the myth problems facing an ancient scholar today. In these determinations, the Greek gods are discussed from two aspects: First of all, as a community with their hierarchies, attributes and privileges that are somehow connected to the organization of human society; then as a symbolic language, a classificatory system, subservient to its own intellectual purpose. But of course, the main question in the theme of all Vernant's research is this: Within what limits and under what forms does myth appear in a society, and society in its myths?
