“This work, which tries to bear the name of Namık Kemal, is not the result of previously given judgments, odes and satires written to please and please, or the aim of harming his reputation or standing side by side with that fame: I tried to write the Namık Kemal of documents. And while I was working like this, I respectfully put aside the Namık Kemal within me and looked for the Namık Kemal of the documents. ... And I constantly patiently searched for Namık Kemal, who invented the word "homeland", as well as Mehmet Kemal, who was happy to eat the food he loved. ... Namık Kemal's life is crowded. Many men came and went in his forty-eight years: With crowns, with hearts, with hats, with turbans, with fezzes... He sat with the prince in the palace, slept with the murderer in the dungeon; He became a writer who could not fit into Istanbul, he became a civil servant who could fit into a frock coat, he became a castlekeeper who was so influential that he said, "When I was in prison, I was as influential as Sultan Aziz"; ... He was left broke enough in Europe to remember to sell his watch; He earned enough money to buy three hundred gold coins a month from his newspaper in Istanbul; ... in short, many things and many people fit into his short life. ... A person's face is partly formed by the faces of those around him; and man's life consists of his own and others' cases. ... This is why I deal with Kemal's events as well as others. That's why I named this work: Namık Kemal - Among the People and Events of his Era.”
