Natık Oğlu Fadıl-Tefekkürün İzinde
Our readers will remember the works of Hayy bin Yaqzan, written at different times under the same name by two thinkers who previously joined the Büyüyenay library. This work of İbnü'n-Nefîs, Er-Risâletü'l-Kâmiliyye fi's-Sîreti'n-Nebeviyye (The Treatise of the Kamil on the Life of the Prophet), or Fadıl bin Nâtık (Fâdıl, son of Nâtık), is a philosophical novel written as a refutation of the ideas put forward by İbn Sina in Hayy bin Yaqzan. Fadıl bin Nâtık is more similar to İbn Tufayl's novel Hayy bin Yaqzan than to İbn Sina's work. In Fadil bin Natik, which is clearly written as a parallel to Ibn Tufayl’s Hayy bin Yaqzan, who grew up alone on an island, the hero Kamil takes the place of Hayy bin Yaqzan, and the intellectual adventure that begins with his birth on a deserted island without a mother or father and shows great similarities to Hayy’s life is told through the eyes of Fadil bin Natik.
The names in Ibn Nafis’ story are striking. The narrator’s name is “Natik’s son Fadil”. Natik means someone who speaks well, is logical, and “Fadil” means virtuous. The hero of the story is Kamil. Kamil represents a person who is physically and mentally mature. The basic claim in these works is that a person can find the creator and religion intellectually without the influence of his environment. Therefore, the heroes of these stories exist on an island, isolated from social life. In Ibn al-Nafis's work, unlike others, Kamil, with his natural intellect, not only discovers the metaphysical principles of existence by observing the universe and untouched nature, but also discovers the emergence of the Islamic prophet and his sharia and the history of Islam up until the time Ibn al-Nafis lived, again completely rationally, and claims that these can also be comprehended rationally. In addition, the arrival of a stranger on a deserted island means the confirmation and completion of the truths reached through reason for Ibn Tufayl's Hayy, while for Kamil it only means being aware of the existence of a human society. On the other hand, Hayy's access to concepts such as sharia and prophethood was possible thanks to this stranger, while Kamil discovered these and their details on his own. His understanding that a religion could only develop within a society was made possible by learning about the existence of other people. Throughout this treatise, Kamil, the hero of the work, tells us through the traces of contemplation that man can reach metaphysical truths in general terms with his natural mind and that the necessity of sharia and prophethood can be determined with this mind.
