Neruda's Postman
In Neruda's Postman, which has been translated into twenty-five languages, the events take place in 1969 on the small Isla off the coast of Chile. It takes place in the town of Negra. There is only one person to whom young Mario, the village postman, delivers letters: the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, who is in exile in the town. Mario looks for ways to talk to the poet he admires and get him to sign his book, and eventually a friendship begins between them. In the small town where simple people live, Neruda, who expects to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, is nominated for the presidency, but when Salvador Allende is elected, the poet is appointed as ambassador to Paris. Mario, on the other hand, is struggling to reunite with Beatriz, his first love. While in Paris, Neruda asks young Mario for unusual help.
With its colorful characters, some of whom are real, it is unforgettable for Chile before General Pinochet's coup. This short novel, which was also turned into a movie, has placed Skármeta among the leading representatives of contemporary Latin American literature, with its poetic language as well as its entertaining and passionate narrative.
