Asahel Grant traveled to Kurdistan as a missionary in the early 1800s, searching for lost tribes, traveling to many places, making interesting observations, keeping a diary, and compiling his impressions into a book. “Nestorians or Lost Tribes” consists of the notes he took during this trip.
Books of travelers, diplomats and missionaries are interesting; They are about life and people, most of them can be read like literary works, they are so full that it is difficult to fit them into a single discipline. These may be disturbing sentences when viewed through today's eyes, but they should be treated as old-time knowledge. These notes, which cover many things about life, from nature descriptions to daily life, from material culture to beliefs, are unique despite all their problematic aspects.
“Habits and dwellings were the same as those described in The Return of the Ten Thousand, more than 2 thousand years ago.”
“Dexterously handling the instruments of death and fearlessly skipping across rugged terrain on angry horses are the most important skills of these brave mountain Kurds.”
“Yezidis do not extinguish candles with their breath or spit into the fire in order not to pollute the fire, which is a sacred element.
