Notebooks of Don Rigoberto
The 'surface' subject of this novel, set in Lima, Peru, is the strange relationships between the stepmother, father and the young man; What is deep down is criticism and rebellion against some institutions, layers and thought patterns of society. Wealthy Don Rigoberto, who works as a senior manager in an insurance company, writes down his sexual fantasies in his notebook, as well as his views opposing all kinds of institutionalization and advocating hedonism and individualism. While it tells the story of a young man who lives under the shadow of an oppressive father and his fascination with his dazzlingly beautiful stepmother, the surprising imagination of this young man who was in love with Egon Schiele, who died at the age of twenty-eight, and identified himself with this painter who dealt with sexuality in his paintings, is also the subject of this novel. Peruvian master novelist Mario Vargas Llosa, who, unlike his youth, strongly opposed institutionalization and the transformation of the individual into a herd person in his later years, defends these beliefs in this book by adding some small motifs from his own life. Like many Latin American writers, Mario Vargas Llosa writes with an understanding that glorifies life and pleasure and exalts personal freedom.
