Notes from the Underground Book Description Notes from the Underground is a "return" novel as well as a beginning when viewed specifically from Dostoyevsky. With this novel, the author opens the gates of hell, so to speak, right on the threshold of the masterpiece series that begins with Crime and Punishment and ends with The Brothers Karamazov. On the other hand, Notes from the Underground is the masterpiece of Dostoyevsky's return in the 1860s to the world of literature from which he had retreated in the 1840s. In the intervening twenty years, a radical change has occurred not only in Dostoyevsky's view of life, but also in the ideals of the enlightened Russian youth. The romantic idealists of the past who believed in "everything that is beautiful and sublime" are gone, replaced by How to Do Mentoring? (1863) came the design of a new generation created by Chernyshevsky, who believed in reason and placed self-interest above everything else. Chernyshevsky's symbol was the crystal palace. Dostoyevsky responded to this with "underground", saying "neither the past nor the present". “I want you all to go to hell! I want peace. I would sell the whole world for a penny so they would leave me alone. Should the world be destroyed, or should I not drink my tea?
