Notes from the Underground
Even being human, a real human being, a human being with flesh and bones, is hard for us. We are ashamed of this, we consider being human a disgrace, and we strive to be unique social people. We are stillborn people and have long been not the children of living fathers, and more and more we like being born that way. We enjoy this. In the very near future, we will somehow find a way to be born from thoughts.
Notes from the Underground, Dostoyevsky's first major work in his own voice, free from the influence of Gogol, is a novel that heralds the great existential literature in Europe. The book begins with a long, crazy speech by the character, who addresses the reader from a state of mind he calls the underground. Then, a humiliation incident experienced by this moralistic, non-conformist, honest person is described. A true masterpiece that has been read for one hundred and fifty years.
