On Being Human
A person's character is shaped by the requirements of the world he has built with his own hands. The character of the middle class in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries showed strong exploitative and hoarding characteristics. This “active” character was determined by the desire to exploit others and accumulate earnings to make even more profit. In the twentieth century, human character orientation shows a great deal of passivity and identification with market values. Modern man is absolutely passive in most of his free time. The eternal consumer; “absorbs” drinks, food, cigarettes, lectures, landscapes, books, films; consumes and swallows everything. The whole world is one big object worthy of his mouth: a big bottle, a big apple, a big breast. Man has become an absorber, eternally expectant and eternally disappointed.
