On Economics - Oikonomikos - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics Book Description Xenophon (ca. 432 BC - 355 BC): Athenian writer, historian, commander. He took a stand against democratic government, blaming his city's defeat in the Peloponnesian War on the lack of discipline resulting from democracy. He fought on the side of Sparta against the Athenians in the Battle of Koroneia in 394 BC. Thereupon, he was accused of treason and exiled, and all his property was confiscated. Xenophon, a student of Socrates, wrote his first work to defend his teacher after his unjust death. His best-known work is Anabasis - Return of the Ten Thousand, which is the return home adventure of Greek soldiers who took part in the power struggle of the Persian prince Cyrus. His main works include the Education of Cyrus and About Tyranny on statesmanship, Hellenica and the State of the Lacedaemons on the Spartans, and Oikonomikos, which can be described as the first economics and business management book in history. In this work, Xenophon conveys valuable information about the social, economic and legal life of his age and teaches ways to live in happiness and prosperity. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
