Cicero (106 BC - 43 BC): Great Roman statesman, orator and thinker. He studied philosophy and law in his youth. With his mastery in the art of oratory, he rose to the rank of consul. He managed to influence people of all ages with his speeches and philosophical and technical works that dealt with Rome in the triangle of individual, traditional social order and state.
In On Friendship, which he wrote in dialogue form inspired by Plato, Cicero has Quintus Mucius Scaevola, Gaius Fannius and their father-in-law, Gaius Laelius, speak. The chief speaker, Gaius Laelius, talks about his friendship with Scipio and gives wise answers and advice about the nature of friendship, how it is granted to people, its benefits and limits.
