On Reading, Writing and Living

The wise man will strive above all to be free from suffering and harassment, will seek silence and leisure, and therefore a quiet, humble life with as few unexpected and dangerous encounters as possible; and thus, having shared so little common experience with his so-called fellows, he will choose a solitary life, or even, if he is of great soul, complete solitude.

It is the same in literature as it is in life: Wherever you turn, you immediately find yourself face to face with a mob of incorrigible people, they have filled every corner, just like summer flies, they flock everywhere and pollute everything. So are a pile of awful books, the invasive weeds of literature that take their nourishment from the ears of wheat and eventually choke it dry. They usurp people's time, money, and attention, the legitimate owners of which are good books and their noble goals.

Therefore, knowing where to stand when it comes to reading is a very important thing. It can be said that the essence of the skill in knowing where to stay back is to persistently stay away from reading any book that is widely read at times almost in an epidemic state, for example, books that create noise for no reason, even reach a few editions in the first and last year of their publication, and then are forgotten. such are political or religious treatises, novels, poems and the like.
