Kahramanlar Çağının İzinde
The account of this excavation expedition by Heinrich Schliemann, who became famous as the “explorer of Troy” – and “plunderer” – is not only of interest to archeology enthusiasts. Schliemann's adventure – and his adventurism – is a vivid example of the interchange of worldviews of romanticism and “realism”. Additionally, this narrative contains vivid observations about the (Western) Anatolia of those years. At the same time, there is the pleasure of a masterful literary narrative about geography and landscape.
“Schliemann is one of the last representatives of the predatory archaeology era. More precisely, it can be seen as a bridge between predatory archeology and methodical archaeology, through the mistakes he made during his excavations, his inventions and the importance of his works. (…) Schliemann, as an important representative of the German Bildung tradition that developed under the influence of the classical literature that laid the foundation of the Enlightenment, tried to be a bridge between the narrative of this literature (especially Homer's) and its counterpart in the field, and was preoccupied with the 'legend''s counterpart in the 'field'. He is a modern-day man who pursues movable and immovable finds where legend or narrative meets reality. As you know, the true source of these findings was 'Priam's treasure' and Schliemann carried all the materials he associated with this 'treasure' to Germany.”
