Open Work, which had a great impact around the world when it was published in 1962 and highlights the dynamics of interaction between the work and the reader/audience, is an extremely important contribution to the poetic literature of the 20th century...
In this work, Umberto Eco traces the avant-garde poetics of the period through examples of music, literature and visual art and proposes a methodology that will enable a critical approach to such works. Starting from a broad scientific and methodological basis, Eco analyzes the process of making sense of the work of art on the axis of the "openness" category, which forms the backbone of avant-garde art aesthetics. In this context, he places special emphasis on the concepts of "multiplicity", "plurality" and "polysemy" and shifts the focus from the "creator" to the reader/audience in the process of making sense of the work.
