The main character of the novel, Philip Roth, is a successful writer, as in reality, and again, as in reality, he goes to Israel in 1988 to meet the well-known writer Aharon Appelfeld. Around the same time, another man named Philip Roth, who introduced himself as a famous writer, was also involved in some shady dealings in Israel.

According to this second Philip Roth, whom the author calls Pipik, the only solution to the Jewish problem is for Jews to leave Israel, where the Arab threat will never disappear, and return to Europe. If the Jews can achieve this, the Europeans will rejoice, "Hooray, our Jews are back!" He will shout and embrace them. This is the final solution to the Jewish problem!
Operation Shylock is the most experimental of American author Philip Roth's novels. This novel, which also won the PEN/Faulkner Award, rapidly raises expectations, but then brings us back to where we started.

In Operation Shylock, real characters and imaginary ones, real events and events that the author allegedly experienced are told in an intertwined fiction. Thanks to the author's absorbing language, you find yourself in the middle of an incredible adventure and at the same time, you start to think about the Jewish diaspora, Zionism, anti-Semitism and Palestine throughout the novel.
