Nam-ı Diğer Grace

Grace Marks, an Irish immigrant and 16-year-old maid in 19th century Canada. She is accused of killing her boss and her mistress. Her accomplice in this brutal murder, James McDermott, puts all the blame on this red-haired beauty while she is being hanged. While the press, the Church, politicians, moralists, Spiritualists chasing the soul, and scientists trying to discover consciousness are groping to complete the portrait of a “murderer,” Grace manages to keep her story on the edge of ambiguity with her expression that does not give away whether she is an angel or a devil.

While Margaret Atwood subtly makes fun of the perception of women as “angels” and “devils” in Another Name for Grace, which she wrote based on a true event, with this literary Mona Lisa portrait she leaves 19th century science and moralism helpless and pulls the human soul to that depth that only literature and art can see, right into the middle of the sociality of crime.
