When the six-hundred-year history of relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe is considered, for some reason, wars, conquests, territorial losses, in short, an endless conflict and the moods created by this come to mind.

However, in the words of Claudio Magris, "The encounter between Europe and the Ottoman Empire is a great example of how two separate worlds, warring and devouring each other, eventually intertwined and enriched each other without even realizing it."

In this work, which won the 2010 European History Book award, Jean-François Solnon deals with the rich history of this intertwining, "conflict and mutual admiration".

The Ottoman Empire and Europe, previously published as Sarık ve İstanbulin (2013) and renamed L'Empire Ottoman et l'Europe in the 2017 edition in France, explains how the mutual perceptions of the conflicting parties were formed and how they transformed over time in literature, painting, music, It explains with examples from a wide and colorful range such as theatre, collections and collectors, fashion and the entertainment world. As this tangle of relationships, in which ambassadors, travelers, artists and translators played a major role, is unraveled by Solnon's active pen and revealed to our eyes, we see how mutual curiosity and admiration sometimes prevail over conflict and fear.
