The thesis that Ottoman crafts collapsed as goods produced in European factories flooded into Ottoman markets after the industrial revolution has long been based on textile production. With this research focusing on Ottoman textile manufacturing in the period from the beginning of the 19th century to the First World War, Donald Quataert reveals that Ottoman manufacturing showed great vitality and developed in the said period. With rich data obtained from Ottoman, European and American archives, the author shows the importance of manufacturing in small workshops and homes. In this book, as has been done so far in the history of economics, it is not explained how industrialization could not be achieved in the Ottoman Empire and the helplessness of Ottoman manufacturers in the face of new conditions. On the contrary, how Ottoman manufacturers adapted to changing conditions, developed creative methods in competition with Europeans and manufacturing activities, their struggle to capture domestic markets, etc. is revealed. Therefore, in the picture drawn in this book, those living in the Ottoman geography appear as active, creative people who know how to adapt to innovations. By discussing and criticizing the dominant approaches and unquestioned assumptions in Middle East studies, Quataert breaks the molds in our minds about society and history, and brings new ideas to yesterday (and today). It allows us to look with different eyes.
