A human being can change and continue to change as long as he is alive."

Horney's neurosis theory, unlike his predecessors, is "constructive". He refutes Freud's theory that the impulses that motivate people can only be controlled or, at best, "sublimated", and says that people can change themselves by changing their circumstances. The conflicts underlying neuroses can be alleviated or even actually resolved, thus achieving true integration of the personality.

Karen Horney, one of the most original psychoanalysts of the generations after Freud, developed an approach that emphasizes the importance of culture and environment and focuses on the problem of alienation, self-actualization and liberation. Proposing a new and dynamic theory of neurosis, Horney deals with the basic conflicts in the situations of "approaching people", "going against people" and "moving away from people" in Our Internal Conflicts.
