Oxford İslam Sözlüğü
The Oxford Dictionary of Islam, published by Oxford University Publishing House, includes frequently used concepts and names in the fields of religion, politics, society and culture, and includes as many articles as possible with short notes that the reader can read without spending too much time. The topics cover many politicians, artists and scientists, ranging from the Taliban to Hamas, from Sunniism to Nusayris, from Necip Mahfuz to Malcolm X, from Mu'tazila to Said Nursîi. In addition to touching on political and historical events, it also provides information about controversial issues such as the theory of evolution, abortion and hijab (veiling).
The Oxford Dictionary of Islam, prepared by an important academician such as John L. Esposito, was written with the participation of more than a hundred academicians and experts. Additionally, all of the titles were determined by a committee with broad participation. Of course, it is not possible to present all the details and comments on the subjects while presenting more than 2000 titles to the reader with short descriptions as much as a handbook. However, the Oxford Dictionary of Islam, which chooses to provide short explanations instead of the detailed information expected from an encyclopedia, thus manages to gather as many topics as possible in a single book. It is an important work and a rich reference source that not only researchers or those interested in religion should have at their bedside, but also everyone at a time when these issues are very much on our country's agenda.
