Peace Bun
In his stories, Fakir Baykurt deals with problems such as the harshness of village life, poverty, ignorance, bigotry, superstition and exploitation, and deals with the material and spiritual world of the villagers from a socialist and realistic perspective. Based on observations and live testimonies, the author occasionally uses a humorous language by bringing daily spoken language into the story; It strikingly depicts the "ordinary person" who is stuck between the wheels of bureaucracy but harbors hope within him, together with the atmosphere of the place he lives in.
We are bringing together the readers of Barış Çöregi, which was first published in 1982:
"We are Turks, sir..." I said.
"Why don't you speak Turkish?"
Oh! The woman is squeezing the whole topic! If they could, the police would call us and hand us over.
"We are bored of these boys, auntie!" Of course, it didn't suit us to say that. "We are in Germany. Our Turkish is not that good. That's why we speak German..." I said, and also understated it a bit, as my father had advised.
"How quickly did you forget your origins by going to Germany for three and a half days? Isn't it a shame?"
"But our lessons there are in German!"
"No matter! You will still speak Turkish!"
The woman with a man's build and a briefcase in her hand gave us a long lecture there. It's okay if he speaks in a lower voice. He was shouting. I melted and slipped into the ground through the cracks of the asphalt. I started to shed my tears uncontrollably. Meanwhile, the Gürsel District bus passed by and we were not aware of it.
We came to Uncle Fuat late at night. Cry God cry. Necmiye is crying too, I am crying too. Germany is on edge, so is Turkey. At school, we are closed from behind and from all four directions. Maybe tomorrow, without workers, what will we become like stupid chickens that have been pushed out of there and can't find a place to step here?
