Political Thought in Modern Turkey Volume 7-Liberalism
The assumption that liberalism has constituted the economic and political "center" in Turkey since the transition to the multi-party era is strong. On the other hand, those who adopt a liberal political identity say that this movement of thought never gained a consistent basis in Turkey - at least until the Özal period. The present volume provides rich material for this discussion. In the volume, figures that are considered to be somehow associated with liberalism, especially the parties and leaders of the "center right", are analyzed in terms of their ties with liberal ideology. Intellectuals and circles - most of which have been forgotten - who tried to ground liberal political thought are discussed. The ways in which liberalism articulates or contrasts with modernism, nationalism, rightism, Kemalism and Islamism are examined. Liberal tendencies are also viewed within their periodic context.
