Politicization of the Alevi Movement from Turkey to Europe
Heterodox Islam constitutes 10 to 30 percent of Türkiye's population. Alevis constitute a significant part of this heterodox population. It is important to understand the dynamics of the Alevi population as a religious community that determines not only the field of religious belief but also the orientations and differentiations in the political field. While the existence of Alevis requires rethinking issues such as secularism and Turkish national identity, on the other hand, how Alevis see and interpret their own politicization processes in this process also gains importance. This work by Élise Massicard, which examines the Alevi movement in both Turkey and Germany from the 1980s to the present, brings a new perspective to the style of politics and the problem of identity in today's Turkey. In this research, Massicard is not satisfied with looking only at belief elements, symbolism or motifs. It deals with different politicization processes among Alevis, ethnic identity problems, and positions that may or may not be reflected in political history. This research, which subjects the relations between religious belief, political sphere and community to a striking analysis, is an important reference source for understanding the Alevi movement and its relationship with politics.
