Power of Labor
This book, which is the product of comprehensive research, examines the trends of workers' protests around the world in the last 130 years in connection with the economic and political dynamics of world capitalism. Based on a new database on workers' protests around the world, the book reveals how the main venues of workers' protests change from country to country with shifts in the geographical spaces of production. The book also tries to determine what is actually new and original about the crisis that the labor movement is in today, in the light of historical data. It ends with evaluations about the new forms of 21st century labor movements that are likely to emerge in the future. The author won the American Sociological Association Distinguished Academic Publication Award (2005) with this book.
"Anyone interested in the past, present and future of world labor movements should definitely read this book. Ian Robinson, Critical Solidarity
"Beverly Silver's book, which is rich and full of strong arguments, presents a historical and class analysis that has long been missing in the globalization literature. Bravo!"
