“This doctrine, which accepts utility or the principle of the highest happiness as the basis of morality, finds our actions right to the extent that they lead to the development of happiness, and wrong to the extent that they produce the opposite of happiness. Happiness means absence of pain and pleasure, unhappiness means absence of pleasure and pain. Now, such a theory of life excites pure hatred in many minds, including some of the most respectable in feeling and purpose. In this view, they state that life (as they call it) has no higher purpose than pleasure—there is no better or nobler object of desire to pursue—but is a wholly vile and despicable doctrine, worthy only of pigs. The followers of Epicurus were derogatorily compared to pigs, and in early and modern times the adherents of the utilitarian doctrine were subjected to equally kindly comparisons by their German, French and English opponents.”
