Elif Şafak's Mahrem, published in 2000 and one of the most admired books in our literature since its publication, tells the story of a socially excluded young woman's trauma-laden life and state of mind. In Mahrem, we meet a young woman who always feels like the other because of her obesity, a woman who always feels like the other, who eats non-stop and throws up what she eats...
But there is also a story underlying the weight she uses as a shield for her body. A painful story. A story of abuse she experienced when she was still a child.
Mahrem's fairytale-like narrative, parallel to the story of the protagonist, first takes us to Pera in 1885, to the tent of Keramet Mumi Keşke Memiş Efendi, full of different and mysterious women; then it takes us to France of the same period and then to Siberia in 1648. One of the women presented for viewing in Keşke Memiş Efendi’s tent is the Samur Kız, whose story goes all the way to Siberia. And the beautiful La belle Annabelle…
With its fairy-tale narrative, masterfully connecting stories from across the ages with its Dictionary of Nazar that expands the possibilities of language, Mahrem is essentially the story of a young woman whose soul was damaged at a very young age.
Also considered to be one of the novels that makes the most beautiful use of magical realism elements in our literature, Mahrem was greatly appreciated by literary circles when it was published and has been translated into many languages since then. Kirkus Reviews defined the book as “a text about misfits and how society views them”; The Independent newspaper described Elif Şafak as “an important heir to Isabel Allende” because of the literary mastery she displayed in this novel.
On the 25th anniversary of Elif Şafak’s writing, Mahrem has been re-published with a new cover and special illustrations by distinguished artist Huban Korman.
Mahrem, like many Elif Şafak’s novels, is a novel about the loneliness of fragile people. It is a text that touches the reader’s heart about seeing and being seen.
