Meyhane is a naturalist masterpiece that examines the slums of Paris through poverty and struggle for survival, alcoholism and misery. The Meyhane, one of Zola's mature works, tells the story of Gervaise Macquart, who settles in a suburb of Paris with her lover Lantier and starts working in a laundromat. While depicting the inevitable decline of a working-class family with themes such as the end of alcohol and idleness, the disintegration of family ties, and the loss of the sense of honesty, Zola presents a naturalistic painting of 19th Century Paris. We present Meyhane, one of the cornerstones of the French novel with its authentic atmosphere and uncompromising realism, with Cemal Süreya's original translation.
