Dostoyevsky's famous Pushkin Speech, delivered at the opening of the Pushkin Monument and commemoration events for the author in 1880, left a deep impression on the audience and was considered a turning point in the history of Russian literature.

"When I expressed the ideal of world-wide unity of humanity, the whole hall seemed to be in hysterics. I cannot describe the enthusiastic screams and shouts that were made when my speech ended. The audience, who did not know each other, were crying, embracing each other and saying that they would be better people from now on, that they would love their neighbors instead of hating them." They were swearing. (…) Turgenev, about whom I had said a few complimentary words during my speech, threw himself into my arms with tears in his eyes. Ivan Aksakov rushed to the podium and told everyone that the speech was not just a speech but a historical event.

From Dostoyevsky's Letter to Anna After the Pushkin Speech "When his turn came, Dostoyevsky, who had previously been sitting as silent as a mouse, took the podium; within five minutes, he had everyone, without exception, in the palm of his hand, as one heart, one mind."
