Rasta and Resistance
This historical saga about the Rasta movement begins with the forced migration of millions of Africans between the 16th and 19th centuries in the context of the trade triangle. The Atlantic slave trade is unique in that it gave rise to a transnational consciousness of Pan-Africanism or “Global Africa.” Behind this idea lies the assumption that African peoples have gone through common experiences due to slavery, colonialism and racial oppression - regardless of their national affiliation. There have been various groups and peoples throughout history who have contributed to the Pan-African story, and the historical and geographical scope of Campbell's work captures this Pan-African spirit. Indeed, Rasta does not appear suddenly in a historical and political vacuum. It is a product of a century-long history of resistance that has become part of the daily life of black people in the trans-Atlantic world.
Campbell takes us on a journey through history. On this journey, we encounter political rebellions, uprisings on the high seas, revolutionary individuals and ideas, and of course, music that gives historical continuity to the political struggles and cultural expressions of the black world.
