The Red-Haired Woman - Theun De Vries
Something whizzes past my head. I quickly reach for the graze. My ear is bleeding. I turn around and they are standing behind me, four men, one with a shovel, their necks stiff, their masks of cowardice, the look of the defeated still wanting to torture in their eyes. The tall, pale-lipped one has fired. His hand, the gun still raised, is still raised, the panic still in his dead eyes. They are afraid, all of them are afraid.
I smiled condescendingly and said, “I shoot better than you.”
I continue walking. It seems to me that the sea has come this far, or that the bottom of this hill is completely filled with salt water. The sun shines from behind the clouds with a light that makes me dizzy and blind. Suddenly I am filled with light, sun and chaos. It is short-lived. Someone below me is shouting, German words, terrible growls and harsh sounds. The chaos inside me collects them like a sea washes away a piece of floating wood. The light is cut off and goes crazy, the light turns into pain. I have to stand. This is no longer light. These are no longer sounds. These are fascist bullets from a submachine gun. I am filled with bullets that rattle with anger. I fall.
Did I shout a name? I am nothing but pain and dust. I want to see the sun. I am a communist. The communist salutes the sun.
The sun greets him!
The sun is gone
The pain is gone.
