“In this book, İsmet Konak provides a wonderful analysis and description of the February Revolution, the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War. In the final analysis, history is ‘the narrative of the narrative’ and as such is always problematic. İsmet Konak overcomes that weakness by using original Russian sources. The book begins with a brief summary of the class struggles leading up to the February Revolution, reminding us of the background of the revolution.
In fact, the February Revolution was a magnificent repetition of the Soviet Uprising of 1905. It was a tremendous celebration of emancipation. Women, workers, peasants, soldiers, people oppressed by the tsarist regime rose up. It was exactly what Arnold Toynbee said, “At the moment of revolution, history begins to move again.” Revolutions always create a duality of power. The February Revolution ended the 300-year rule of the Romanov Dynasty. Eight months later, the October 1917 Revolution also ended the dual power situation.
The Russian Civil War is not well known in the world or in Turkey. However, with the Bolsheviks in power in October 1917, everything was not over and done with. The revolution had to struggle with a civil war that would last approximately five years (1917-1922). İsmet Konak makes a comprehensive analysis of the civil war and largely eliminates the weakness in that area. What was really at stake was not a conventional civil war. It was also to overcome the imperialist siege. In our popular expression, it was a difficult showdown with the 'seven worlds'.
As Konak stated, the 'socialist construction' could not begin the day after the Winter Palace was captured. The regime had to deal with a series of difficult obstacles such as hunger, civil war, imperialist siege, and famine.
I read the Red Revolution, which has a perfect language and didactic structure, with great pleasure and learned a lot. I congratulate our friend İsmet Konak…”
