The construction of "I/we" through its relationship with "other/other" people and groups causes us to make different readings of "reality" and can hinder efforts and even discussions to live in a just society. During our research team's studies in the field of children; The seeds of this research were laid by the fact that, unfortunately, we repeatedly encountered different forms of the expression "They are not children anyway" for the children of groups that appear to be "other". Othering is such a powerful mechanism that it can even lead to the denial of the fact that the child of the "other" is a child. This text, which is the book version of the TUBITAK research titled "Understanding Otherization in Encounter with the Other: Discussing Empathy and Equality with Young People in Turkey", aims to understand othering/non-otherization and the determinants of the action that results in marginalization, in the light of relevant literature from different disciplines, with the data obtained from qualitative and quantitative research. aims to detect.

The extreme point of separating oneself from the "other" while constructing "I/we" can be defined as "othering". The other on the same level as yourself; The process of marginalization, including prejudice, where people do not have the same rights and do not see themselves on the same moral plane; It is when a person considers another person as part of a group and approaches him or her with certain negative perceptions and attitudes. The aim of this study, which emerged after a 2.5-year research process that witnessed numerous events in the world and in Turkey, is to reveal how marginalization occurs, what determinants it develops around and in what ways it is constructed; is to try to understand how the marginalization mechanism works and to identify commonalities, differences, and basic factors affecting the process.
