Resurrection
Nekhludoff, a rich and handsome Russian prince, leaves Katyusa, a beautiful peasant girl in the service of his aunts, after seducing her. Their next encounter takes place years later in a courtroom: Katyusa has fallen into a bad path and will be tried for murder. The prince, who holds himself responsible for Katyusa's situation, will change completely under the overwhelming pressure of his conscience and will begin to look at the world he lives in with different eyes. This masterpiece, which draws a realistic portrait of the human soul, conscience, faith and 19th century Tsarist Russia, caused Tolstoy to be declared an atheist and to be excommunicated from the Church in 1901.
