To our knowledge, for the first time in this book, such a large photographic archive of the major revolutionary movements from the Paris Commune to the present day is compiled. Etymologically, revolution means an inversion: It turns social hierarchies inside out, or rather, it corrects an upside down world... In this study, we preferred classical revolutions for the sake of consistency, egalitarian social revolutions that aim to distribute land and wealth, abolish classes and give power to the workers: Paris Commune, Mexican revolution of 1910-1920, two Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917, German and Hungarian revolutions of 1919, Spanish revolution and civil war of 1936-1937, Chinese revolution and Cuban revolution.
We therefore had to exclude other revolutionary movements of a different, though not less important, nature: democratic, antibureaucratic and antitotalitarian revolutions, such as the Hungarian revolution of 1956, and anti-colonial revolutions and national liberation struggles, such as the Indochina revolution, the Algerian revolution. Since the existence of a social dimension in these revolutions we are talking about is undeniable, these distinctions are not absolute, but in the final analysis, different phenomena are in question.
The final chapter reviews a number of revolutionary events of the last thirty years that should be distinguished from revolutions in the literal sense of the word: May 68, the Portuguese Carnation revolution of 1974-1975, the Nicaraguan revolution (1978-1979), the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas in 1994. -1995.
