Melville draws a panorama of America through the portrait of a man who measures the rapidly changing material and spiritual values of an industrializing society. A soft-spoken, well-mannered passenger boards the steamboat named Sadakat, which is sailing on the Mississippi River, on "April First" day. In each episode, we encounter him with a different identity, sometimes he is a mute, sometimes he is a well-travelled man. So, is it possible to know who this "solid man" really is? Describing the taming process of the "Wild West", where capitalism began to extend its sinister body, in a philosophical, allegorical, almost postmodern way, The Strong Man is the narrative of a "masked parade" where identities, ideas and intentions are constantly disguised in new guises.
