Roman History Book Description In this new English version of the most elegant of Roman historians, the translator's aim has been to remain as faithful as possible to the original text, consistent with the idioms of the languages concerned. However, while providing more information specifically for the wishes of the student of studies of the classical period, the translator has not overlooked the tact and hesitation required to satisfy the expectations of the reader of the English version. There have been several translations of our author's works before, but the one that should be mentioned before the public right now, or is particularly admirable, is Baker's translation, which is undoubtedly the work of a very talented work, remaining more faithful to the original and making other translation efforts unnecessary. The current translation The edition used for is the published article in its best form to date from the original text, which was carefully revised under the supervision of Travers Twiss at Oxford. The few notes and illustrations permitted by the means of this edition in popular form are confined chiefly to an explanation of the difficulties encountered in grammar. Descriptions of history and antiquity are already so abundantly provided by excellent guides and dictionaries that it is unnecessary to swell the existing volumes with appendices in that department. Among the Roman History handbooks that can be used most advantageously by the student is Twiss's 2-volume, octave 8 edition Niebuhr's Summaries on Roman History, a work frequently mentioned in these pages.
