By analyzing the works of five great novelists (Cervantes, Stendhal, Flaubert, Proust, and Dostoyevsky), Girard attempts to define a particular type of novel that he calls the "triangular desire" novel. This study, which contains one of the sharpest criticisms of romantic illusion, goes beyond the scope of literature and examines the psychology of contemporary life, phenomena such as fashion, advertising and propaganda, and seeks answers to the following basic question: How do people deceive themselves and when can they no longer deceive?
