Selahaddin
“Salahaddin Ayyubi” Between Truth and Legend Ali Güler Crusades allow us to read the concepts of “Occupation and Conquest” very clearly through Jerusalem. On July 15, 1099, when the Crusader commanders Godfery and Tankret occupied Jerusalem and rode through the streets filled with blood and corpses, Hz. When the scene where Jesus describes love, peace and justice is polluted with blood, people remember the peak of hatred and brutality.
When Saladin's army conquered Jerusalem on October 2, 1187, not blood was flowing in the streets, but forgiveness, gratitude and mercy. In this place where Muslims were looking for an excuse to forgive, they did not look for a reason to massacre. A contemporary Western historian expressed this situation with these succinct words:
“In order to save with mercy, instead of killing with righteousness… If the only known fact about Saladin is the conquest of Jerusalem, this is enough to prove that he was the most generous and brave conqueror of his age, and perhaps of all ages.” In this book, along with Saladin's life, struggle and legacy, we will also witness the insight into the curiosity of the barbarian tribes of Western Europe towards the holy lands, which turned into a phenomenon in that age, and the socio-political power balances formed on the east-west axis.
