Ships of Saladin - Ayyubid Naval Forces in the Mediterranean during the Age of Saladin Book Description Yusuf b. Ayyub would soon be known as Salahaddin, that is, "the one who is devoted to his religion", by both Muslims and Crusaders. To commemorate Salah al-Din, who was patronized by important statesmen of his time since his childhood and successfully fulfilled many military duties, only with the conquest of Jerusalem and the Battle of Hattin would be to ignore his strategic-military genius. In his book Salâhaddîn's Ships, Doğan Mert Demir examines perhaps the least touched upon aspect of a frequently covered period in world war history: the Ayyubid Naval Forces in the Mediterranean during the Era of Salahaddîn. While the Saladin period has been the subject of thousands of studies related to the political history of land wars, the number of independent works written about Ayyubid maritime in the same period is almost non-existent. Although the richness and diversity of the sources of the Saladin period provide an advantage, the fact that the written culture formed within the framework of Saladin's life is blended with legends creates a serious disadvantage. For this reason, Doğan Mert Demir overcomes one of the biggest difficulties that a historian studying the Salahaddin period will face by meticulously examining the primary sources of the period (Arabic, Byzantine, Crusader and Coptic records). Thus, it creates a coherent narrative on the fine line between myth and reality. Demir's work clearly shows that efforts to understand Saladin's struggle with the Crusaders will always be incomplete without examining his maritime activities. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
