Saladin - Osprey Great Commanders Book Description
Life stories, combat experiences, tactics and strategies of history's greatest commanders...
OSPREY Great Commanders Series, which examines all aspects of the greatest commanders in world history, continues with Selahaddin Eyyûbî…
The 11th century was a period when deep changes occurred in the Islamic world and distinguished Turkish administrators dominated the entire Muslim Middle East. In this period when Arabs and Iranians were cornered militarily, even though their religious, commercial and cultural activities were intense, the tension between Sunnis and Shiites was rapidly escalating, and Christians were turning their eyes to Jerusalem, Saladin's war against the Crusaders made him one of the most important forces in the Middle East. It was of great importance for him to be accepted as a strong ruler.
Selâhaddîn Ayyubî, praised by Eastern and Western historians as a military genius and strategy master, was the first ruler to use the title "Hâdimü'l-Haremeyn" (servant of Mecca and Medina) due to the importance he gave to the Hejaz region. It dominated a very wide and strategic area from Libya to Damascus, from Yemen to Ahlat and today's Northern Iraq. He put an end to the Fatimid Caliphate and established the Ayyubid dynasty in Egypt, won a great victory against the Crusaders in Hattin, ended the Crusader occupation in Jerusalem, built many madrasahs, mosques, bridges and castles, and became a leader not only in the Islamic geography but also in the world. He took his place among the most important commanders in history.
This study, which focuses on the military life of Selâhaddîn Ayyubî, tries to unravel the secret behind his being a strategic genius. While doing this, he re-evaluates his tactics and political activities that made him a legend in the history of world war. He presents to the reader the fateful moments in his personal history, the tension between him and his commanders, and the atmosphere on the battlefields as vividly as possible.
