Seclusion

Mary McAllister, a seventy-year-old widow who suffered permanent damage to her appearance as a result of the violence she suffered at the hands of her abusive husband and suffered from a severe anxiety disorder throughout her life. For many years, he spent all his time in front of the window of his marble mansion, watching the people of Mill River, Vermont, and never left his house. He has little contact with the outside world: mail, television, newspapers and his bedroom window overlooking the town. The priest with a habit of plagiarism, the ambitious nurse and the town's "madman" are among the rare people who have seen Mary.

For the residents of the town, the white marble mansion and this old woman living in it have always been mysterious. Some townspeople even think the woman is a witch.
