- British traveler and political administrator EB Soane traveled to Mesopotamia and Kurdistan in 1907. Soane, who previously converted to Islam and took the name Mirza Gulan Hüseyin Şirazi, went to Suleymaniye and Halabja and served in the service of Adile Hanım. After his duties in Baghdad and Mendeli, he was appointed by the British to manage Xaneqin. According to the former Civil Commissioner of Mesopotamia, Sir Arnold T. Wilson; "He rebuilt the city that the Turks had destroyed, reestablished trust, opened schools where the language of instruction was Kurdish rather than Turkish or Arabic, and gave the local government of this entirely Kurdish region a distinctly Kurdish character."
Expressing his gratitude to the Kurds, whom he describes as "kind", "generous" and "unique", Soane states that he wants to bring to light this national character, which has until now been shown as wild, treacherous and cruelty itself.
