Secret Notes from the Period of Abdulhamid
Secret Notes consists of the notes kept between 1895 and 1905 by the Swiss Lui Ramber, who spent a long time in Turkey during the last period of the Ottoman Empire, held important positions such as directorships of the Anatolian Company and the Ottoman bank and general manager of Reji, and finally died in this country (1919).
In the words of İbrahim Alaeddin Gövsa, "The work, which contains very knowledgeable and influential information and observations about the state and government affairs of the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II and the characteristics of many office holders, is one of the valuable documents for the late Ottoman history."
In addition to being a first-hand and unique source on the regime and Ottoman finance, it also provides information on many economic, cultural, religious, ethnic, folkloric and political issues related to the last period of the Ottoman Empire; It contains valuable information, observations and determinations about institutions, individuals, events and many cities - from Thessaloniki to Jerusalem, from Lesbos to Cairo...
An important lesson to be learned from the work is that there is no harm in employing foreign experts since they are included in the protection of nations and that they should not be employed unless necessary, and that the bitterness and disadvantages of leaving the management of some institutions to the representatives of foreign companies and institutions are once again revealed.
