Shared Stories
The prose masterpiece that was written by the Italian poet, philosopher and essayist Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837), who assimilated the heritage of Western civilization by reading the texts in their original languages and had great knowledge of the Greco-Roman culture, when he was only twenty-six years old, was criticized by the critics of the period. It was reacted by, and it was declared a banned book; In the 20th century, it was understood again that it was a unique, "great poem".
Leopardi left a profound impact on modern Italian literature. Writers such as Eugenio Montale, Umberto Eco and Italo Calvino found a model and a master in Leopardi.
Leopardi, who continues to come to terms with the unbearable weight of life without a break, expresses his views on life and humanity in a satirical language, by making use of old myths in his short stories; He transforms human desires and disappointments into permanent images through fictional dialogues. During the Kissas, Fashion and Death, the Physicist and the Metaphysician, the Dwarf and the Goblin, the Earth and the Moon talk, Prometheus bets, the Academy of Satirists distributes prizes; Mummies, birds, wild roosters, philosophers and street vendors take their share in man's inexhaustible longing for happiness, boredom, love and death.
Even in prose works, Italian writers show their true genius in texts where the most inventions and ideas are fit into a few pages; just like in Leopardi's Shared Kissas, which have no analogues in other literature.
