- Translated from German: Neşe Köker
- Paul Borchardt went to Kurdistan in 1916 as the translator of a Turkish-German military delegation. During his days in Kurdistan, he came into intense contact with the people and became a permanent guest of the bazaars in Sulaymaniyah and Zakho. He goes to the workshops of Kurdish, Assyrian and Jewish silversmiths and becomes friends with them. During the years of war and hunger, rich Kurdish families dispose of their old family jewels. Borchardt also takes advantage of this opportunity, collecting many valuable pieces. The collection was seized by the Allied Powers in Istanbul in 1918, but was returned 3 years later. Borchardt managed to take a significant part of the works to Germany and exhibited them there. In the book, which includes the story of this valuable collection with photographs, Rudolf Berliner also evaluates the collection from the perspective of art history.
