Diktatörlüğün ve Demokrasinin Toplumsal Kökenleri
Barrington Moore's work, The Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy, which gave one of the first permanent examples of the "historical sociology" school, which has become respected today in social sciences, is considered a "classic of sociology".
In this work, Moore examines three paths leading to modernization: He argues that the first path, formed by the English Puritan Revolution, the French Revolution, the American Civil War and the "bourgeois revolution", with violence at its root and essence, has reached the result of "democratic capitalism".
Showing in the example of China that another path to modernization is the communist dictatorship achieved through the "peasant revolution", he is of the opinion that this path opens the doors to a free society in the future, to the extent that it clears the feudal forces.
The third, which had neither a peasant revolution nor a bourgeois revolution; It shows that modernization is the path followed by Japan, which is called "Asian fascism", with the class coalition called "the marriage of iron and rye", established by the aristocracy and a weak bourgeoisie under its control, in the face of the revolution of the lower classes and the threat of Western imperialism.
India, which has more or less achieved democracy but has not fully achieved modernization, is an example of a fourth path. In this example, Moore focuses on the heavy price paid by the masses for what he calls "peaceful change" without resorting to revolution.
Barrington Moore, who does not allow any political order to escape from his ethical judgments and critical approach, makes the following determination about established orders: "The idea that cultural and social continuity does not require explanation... overlooks the fact that (these) must be recreated in each generation, often with great pain and trouble." "In order to maintain and transmit a system of values, people are punched, pushed, sent to detention centers, thrown into concentration camps, deceived, bribed, made into heroes, encouraged to read newspapers, stood up against a wall and shot, and sometimes they are even taught sociology." (pp. 561-562)
Following in Moore's footsteps, George Ross, Theda Skocpol, Tony Smith and Judith Eisenberg Vichniac's article "Barrington Moore's Social Origins and Beyond: An Analysis of Social History from the 1960s to the Present" (1998) has been added to this Turkish edition.
