Social Theory as Science
This book was written by a sociologist interested in the philosophy of science and a philosopher interested in problems related to social sciences and scientific method. The book offers a new perspective on how scientific analysis of social life can be done.
It is observed that in previous studies on the subject, social science studies were either not included or these studies were not subjected to a sufficient philosophical analysis. In this book, different understandings of the nature of science are evaluated, based on the views of important sociological theorists.
The book is divided into three parts. In the first part, the authors analyze positivist, realist and conventionalist interpretations of natural sciences; In the second part, they examine the similarities and differences between positivist and realist analyzes of social life, drawing attention to the equivalents of similar interpretations in social sciences. Structure, the key concept within realism, is examined in depth. The third part focuses on the nature of human action and the role of values and certain unnatural views on ideology in the social sciences; The connection between these and a realistic understanding of social life and formation is discussed. In addition to these, the authors also question how science itself can be analyzed theoretically.
